Beartree Recreation Area holds it's annual
Kids' Derby Day!
May 5th, 2007 was the Annual Kids' Derby Day at the Beartree Recreation Area in Damascus, VA. Operated by the CFIA, Beartree is located within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area on the George Washington / Jefferson National Forests. Within Beartree is a 14 acre lake great for water activities, such as fishing.
Which makes it a great spot for the Annual Kids' Derby Day where children are invited to come try their hand with "hook, line, and sinker"!. The USDA Forest Service hosts this event.
This year, we had about 50 participants...and Smokey Bear even
visited and gave out the awards! Prizes were awarded for the three
biggest fish caught: a 14 3/4 inch rainbow trout that weighed in at 1
lb. 2 1/2 oz. took first prize. We also had a "casting" contest in
which the 3 who were closest to the target got prizes.
It was a little rainy that day, but it didn't dampen the spirits of our littlest fisher people. A great time was had by all!
