Campground Managers and Maintenance

The Cradle of Forestry Interpretive Association operates 30 campgrounds for the US Forest Service in five states:  North Carolina, Virginia Pennsylvania, Indiana and Alabama.  These campgrounds range in size from 10 to over 200 sites.  Each campground has a manager who is responsible for overseeing the operations of that campground.  Most campgrounds are staffed with a maintenance team to assist in those operations.  Duties vary based on size, location and staff.

Campground Host Opportunities

The Cradle of Forestry in America Interpretive Association is a not-for-profit organization established to support and assist the U.S. Forest Service. One of the more visible programs is the day-to-day management of Forest Service Campgrounds including recruiting, training, and placing campground hosts. Your primary responsibility as a host will be contributing to the efforts of the Forest Service to help provide a memorable experience for our camping visitors.

We manage campgrounds in the following National Forest:

  • Pisgah National Forest, NC
  • Nantahala National Forest, NC
  • George Washington National Forest, VA
  • Jefferson National Forest, VA
  • Bankhead National Forest, AL
  • Allegheny National Forest, PA
  • Hoosier National Forest, IN

Becoming part of this team of hosts will involve you in these activities:

  • Greeting and registering camping guests, and collecting user fees.
  • Providing information about the campground facilities and recreational opportunities in the National Forest.
  • Helping maintain the good appearance of the campground through light grounds up-keep and more.
  • Using your creativity to meet special needs such as interpretive programming, or carpentry, or designing bulletin boards-whatever needs to be done that you would enjoy doing.
  • Assessing and meeting needs of campers by daily visits to sites in assigned areas.

Hosts are provided a campsite with electricity and water hook-ups (some sites have full hook-ups). Most hosts work about twenty-four hours each week and need to plan to be in the campground across the weekends when there are a large number of visitors as well as two other days.

The campground season runs April-October. It is helpful if volunteers can work three consecutive months or more. Think about what skills you and your spouse have which you would hope to use as a campground host. (Example: artistic, carpentry, clerical, general maintenance, landscaping, organizing programs, people skills . . .)

There is no secret to being a good campground host-it simply calls for treating fellow campers like you expect to be treated when you pull into your favorite campground!
